Parent Entrepreneur – Explore Your Possibilities

May 29, 2014 by Jeff Stephens 2 Comments

Can you REALLY be a Parent Entrepreneur?

Being a parent is a full time job…obviously. But, should that be all you do?

I believe all parents should be working to expand their exposure to the online world. Engagement with today’s emerging technology ultimately enables you to be more knowledgeable and more marketable. Let’s face it. Today’s job market can be scary and tumultuous. What may appear to be solid footing with a particular company may quickly give way to unexpected scrambling to find ANYTHING that will help you pay the bills.

parent entrepreneurIn order to protect yourself, you should be engaged with today’s tech. At a minimum, pay attention to what is going on. Know the vernacular. Understand the high level platforms that exist so you can at least participate in the conversation. Don’t let society pass you by. Don’t be the dinosaur in the office. Don’t fade away to the background and become more and more disconnected from the heartbeat of the connected world.

Beyond simply preparing for the unexpected, you should look beyond. Take a serious look at the possibilities. The Internet is a bastion of opportunity. Options are as endless as your mind can wander. Should you really be a parent entrepreneur?

So, I want to give you a homework assignment. Don’t worry, you don’t have to turn it in if you don’t want to.

Within the next week, take a look at your insane schedule. Find 30 minutes where you can give this a little thought. Maybe you can do this at lunch. Maybe you can do it during your commute. Turn down the radio and let the hum of your car gliding over the road provide the serenity to really think. Find time in your life and then add that 30 minutes to your schedule. Mark it on the calendar. Commit to the date and time and honor that commitment.

In that 30 minutes, ask yourself if there is something more you could be doing. Something that you REALLY care about. Something more you want to do. Something you are passionate about. Something you wouldn’t mind doing in your off hours. Something that might also present the opportunity to make money. Something that would make you a parent entrepreneur.

Write your ideas down. Take a minute to capture your thoughts in the event you decide to act on them later.

At least take the time to think of what makes you happy.

Something is better than nothing. Taking that first step of capturing the thought can often be the catalyst to something amazing. Don’t be afraid to explore how you might be able to turn a passion or skill into a side business. Being a parent entrepreneur can be very fulfilling and is absolutely possible.

So, what more could I be doing for my Hectic ecoSystem? Tons. What am I going to do…one thing. Create content. I’m going to set aside at least 1 hour every day to write. Write something, even it can’t be posted that day. I’ve spent too much time trying to get things written and then posted. I’m starting to collect lots more ideas (kind of like drinking from a firehouse, actually), so now I need to do something.

So in short, I’m going to TAKE ACTION and WRITE.
